The Royal British Legion Ashburton Branch
The Ashburton Branch of the Royal British Legion was founded in 1927. The first president was Major Varwell, followed by Colonel Fosbrook. Meetings were held in various public houses until 1946 when the Branch moved into the present Nissen Hut. Branch meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 6:45PM in The Hut.
Although ownership of The Hut passed to The Hut charity in 2021, the Ashburton Branch remains the principal tenant and has first call upon dates for Branch events. The Branch President is Dr. Andrew Prince Lt. Cdr. RN (Retd.) and the Branch Chairman is Martyn Brooks, WO1 RM (Retd.). Membership of the Royal British Legion is not limited to former members of the armed services but is open to all who share the values of the Legion.
The Branch is busiest around the time of "November Ceremonies", when the annual poppy appeal raises funds for the Legion to continue its work. John and Amanda Germon are the joint poppy appeal coordinators.
The Ashburton Branch has its own webpage, available through the Royal British Legion website: you can reach it by clicking here. The Branch also advertises its activities on its Facebook Page.

Growing Space
Ashburton Growing Space is a new Community Garden project aiming to improve people’s physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing through growing and sharing food. We are based within the grounds of the Hut at Blogishay Lane.
During our first growing season we built up a small but dedicated team of volunteer gardeners/growers, and produced fruit and vegetables, some of which were donated to the Community Fridge or used for a community fund-raising event and meal in the town. Of equal benefit has been the social interaction and sense of belonging to a shared venture, and the physical outdoor activity, connecting to the natural world. The project is about growing people as well as food! For more information click here, or to connect to the Growing Space Facebook Page.
