 History of The Hut

The Hut at Blogishay Lane charity took ownership of The Hut from the Royal British Legion in September 2021. We took this on because of the example of Ashburton's St. John Ambulance Hall, which was sold without the consent of the people of Ashburton and turned into flats for a profit.

The building is originally a Nissen hut, which is a prefabricated steel structure originally for military use, especially as barracks, made from a half-cylindrical skin of corrugated iron. It was designed during the First World War by the American-born, Canadian-British engineer and inventor Major Peter Norman Nissen. Our example was put up in Ashburton around 1946 on a plot of land next to the Recreation Ground that was formerly a bowling green. It has been adapted with a kitchen to the rear, fitted with a full suite of modern units and appliances which we won from Rawle, Gammon & Baker (RGB) in a competition.
